Reflections on Past Ventures of Larian Studios Reflections on Past Ventures of Larian Studios

Larian Studios has made a resolute decision not to produce any downloadable content (DLC), expansions, or sequels for the celebrated RPG.

Turning the Page:

Director of Baldur’s Gate 3, Swen Vincke, divulged to IGN at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2024 that Larian Studios had initially considered DLC and a potential Baldur’s Gate 4, yet eventually steered towards fresh undertakings.

New Horizons:

Vincke expressed the studio’s reluctance to venture into new projects without proper closure for Baldur’s Gate 3, stating, “We hadn’t really had closure on BG3 yet and just to jump forward on something new felt wrong.”

Shifting Tides:

Exploring the challenges of adapting the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) 5th Edition into a video game, Vincke emphasized the studio’s eagerness to delve into fresh gaming mechanics: “There are a lot of constraints on making D&D, and 5th Edition is not an easy system to put into a video game.”

Passion’s Influence:

Vincke recognized the lack of genuine enthusiasm within Larian Studios for creating Baldur’s Gate 3 DLC, noting, “You could see the team was doing it because everyone felt like we had to do it, but it wasn’t really coming from the heart.”

Surprising Revelations:

Contrary to expectations, Vincke observed the team’s elation upon hearing the decision, remarking, “I thought they were going to be angry at me… I saw so many elated faces, which I didn’t expect, and I could tell they shared the same feelings, so we were all aligned with one another.”

Continued Legacy:

While ensuring continued support for Baldur’s Gate 3, including cross-platform mod facilitation, Vincke assured fans that the game’s heritage would persevere under Hasbro Inc‘s supervision at Wizards of the Coast.

Regretful Path:

Reflecting on Larian’s prior decision to collaborate with Google Stadia, Vincke labeled it as “really stupid.”

Lessons Learned:

Vincke recalled the involvement of Stadia in the early days of Baldur’s Gate 3, sharing regrets over the game’s announcement at a Google Stadia event in 2019, especially with Alphabet Inc’s Stadia ceasing operations in 2023.

Unforeseen Outcomes:

Initially enticed by Stadia’s benefits like easy player access sans installations, Vincke admitted the deal was a blunder that did aid in funding CGI production for the game.

Closing Thoughts:

“It was a really stupid deal and I should never have done it, but it allowed me to pay for the CGI,” Vincke said regarding the collaboration.
