Canadian Regulator Broadens Basic TV Package with Uvagut TV Inclusion

Empowering Diversity Through Cultural Inclusion

OTTAWA, ON and GATINEAU, QC, Oct. 22, 2024 /CNW/ – The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has recently granted approval for the addition of Uvagut TV, a channel provided by the Nunavut Independent Television Network, to the basic TV package in Canada.

Fostering Cultural Relevance

Uvagut TV predominantly features content in Inuktut, thereby catering to Inuit communities that previously lacked such access to culturally pertinent programming. This decision not only promotes cultural inclusion but also contributes to enhancing the diversity of content available to the Canadian populace.

Public Support and Affordability

The CRTC received an overwhelming 5,000-plus comments from the public expressing support for the inclusion of an Inuit television service in the basic TV package. Notably, Uvagut TV will now be part of the basic TV package without incurring any additional costs beyond the existing maximum monthly fee of $25.
